PRESIDENT'S
PERSPECTIVE

JOHN
STERN
Here
we are again in a changing marketplace. The stock market is
correcting and the dot coms are no longer the new craze. The
technology and entertainment industries remain strong in the
real estate community.
On the one hand we have large sublease space coming onto the
Westside (approximately 850,000 square feet) and we have a
700,000 square foot new project being developed in Century
City. Marina Del Rey has more than 20 new development projects
in the planning stages. All of these projects have a tremendous
economic impact on our community.
As 2001 unfolds, we will get a better sense of what's happening.
We willcontinue to design our programs to keep you in tune
with the beat. Our programs on these and other projects have
been very successful. The interaction at our events between
our members and our speakers has been very informative and
personal. I want to thank our general membership for supporting
all of our sell-out programs.
We have been very fortunate that our high level speakers continue
to educate all of us on new development ideas and concepts
that will affect all of our futures.
We look forward to seeing you at our upcoming programs.

KEEPING
US
INFORMED
The
Government Relations Committee, chaired by Sandy Paris, recently
presented a paper on the State Initiatives on topics of concern
to our members.
In addition Sandy and Craig Lawson have reported on the implementation
of the new Los Angeles City Charter as it realigned the City's
Planning Department. Panel members included LAHq past president
and member of the City-wide Planning Commission, Chet Widom.
The members at the wellattended meeting heard that the new
process was working well and that the newly appointed commissioners
were being integrated into the system. Concern was expressed
about how the Neighborhood Councils would interact with the
planning commissions. The alert to developers was to contact
their projects' respective area councils early in the planning
process. The message to business was to get on their neighborhood
councils at the initial phase of formation.
