NEW HOUSING
Plans for Valencia were revealed by Thomas L. Lee, Chairman & Chief Executive Officer of Newhall Land at a recent luncheon. The twin themes of quality of life and balance of land-use for the growing population form the basis of the development of this new master planned town. The 15,000 acre community was started in 1965 and the region now supports 40,000 jobs and homes.

Thomas Lee of Newhall Land (I.) finishes his presentation with final questions from Past President Stan Michota (c.) and President John Stern.
The primary activity is in Valencia where new communities featuring paseos are planned around a lake called Bridgeport and another is being planned around a golf course. Apartments, condominiums and workplace sites are all a part of the community. Over 20,000 new homes and jobs are being planned, with recreation facilities, schools and lush neighborhoods.

Welcoming new member Carol Burle (Universal Studios) to the Board of Directors are Rasa Bauza (Paramount Studios) and President John Stern.

BROADBAND CABLE ACCESS
Over the past months, the controversy over whether existing cable operators should be required to provide "open access" of their systems to internet service providers (ISPs) has reached the Los Angeles area. This matter involves high stakes, since the demand to provide high-speed internet service through broadband and other means grows at a rapid pace.

Ed Casey (r.) thanks Stephanie Schroder for her portion of the program.
The speakers, Steven Crosby, Vice President, AT&T Wireless Services, and Stephanie Schroder, CDI Group, addressed these issues and the potential impact on businesses in the Los Angeles area. This successful program was presented by the Economic Development and Environmental Committee and compiled by Ed Casey, Marian Harvey and Allen
Walz.
COMMITTEE WORK
Sandy Paris, Governmental Relations Chair, has sent a letter with Board approval to the City Council opposing increasing assessments on new housing which is being sponsored by Los Angeles schools. This measure is counter productive to developers and puts an extra burden on construction for new housing which is desperately needed.

LOYAL SERVICE
A few years ago LAHq established a service award in memory of Bill Harkness who had been a loyal member for over 30 years, his last 10 as treasurer.
The William Harkness Memorial Award is given to a member who like Bill has given years of dedicated service and loyal support to the Association.
This year the Committee (appointed by President John Stern and chaired by Sharon Kaplan) selected Marilyn Pepper as this year's recipient.

Marilyn Pepper (l.) accepts the Service Award from First Vice President Sharon Kaplan.
The first honoree was Pete SooHoo; and like Bill (who was a close friend), was also a member for over 30 years and the Executive Director during much of that time.
Previous honorees include Norman Murdoch, who has served under seven presidents, and Barbara Trister, 3-time Past President and continuing Chair of the Annual Awards Luncheon.
