IN MEMORIAM

John Argue was a deserving
recipient of our Spirit of Los Angeles Award for his role in bringing
the 1984 Summer Olympics
to Los Angeles.
He was the chairman
of the Southern California Committee for the Olympic Games and with Peter
Ueberroth (another LAHq Spirit of Los Angeles Award Recipient) became
part of the Amateur Athletic Foundation which used the surplus from the
successful games for Southern California youth sports.
John was a five term
Board Chair of the USC Board of Trustees among his many civic and philanthropic
endeavors. The Los Angeles Daily journal listed John as one of the top
100 most influential attorneys in California.
He was very supportive
of LAHq and a good friend of many on the Board of Directors. He will be
missed.

Excerpts
from the
Frank Gehry Introduction
by Chris Modrzejewski
The Spirit of Los Angeles Award is given annually to one person or organization
that embodies the leadership, innovation and entrepreneutial spirit and
attitude that has defined Los Angeles for more than a century.
Whether it has been the development of amazing public works projects such
as the California Aqueduct and City Hall in the early part of the 20th
Century, or our ability to continually redefine the "new" economy
as Los Angeles did with aerospace during the middle and late 20th Century
and technology and entertainment today, Los Angeles and its leaders have
continued to set the standard.
Today, I have the honor of recognizing an individual that has established
the highest standard throughout his career and has brought Los Angeles
spirit and innovation to the cities throughout the word with his ability
to redefine architecture and the way that we view our buildings. He has
also proven that amazing builidngs have the ability to generate economic
revitalization - a point relevant in Downtown Los Angeles today as we
continue to debate community redevelopment and the need for a vibrant
urban core.
Frank
Gehry, and his world-renowed architecture firm - Gehry Partners are long-time
residents of Los Angeles. He and His firm have designed and developed
many of the most architecturally significant buildings of the 20th Century
including Spain's Guggenheim Museum Bilboa and the DZ Bank Building in
Berlin.
As
you all know, accross the street we are witnessing the creation of one
of Franck Gehry's latest Masterpieces - the Walt Disney Concert Hall.
If you are like me, you drive by it and look up and wonder how all of
the pieces are fitting together and regret that Los Angeles is not a hub
for the steel industry, because he has kept thousands of workers busy
over the past couple of years.
...
and we have had the priviledge of watching an historic structure be erected
- and it will be one that will continue the revitalization of downtown
and the fine arts for our city.

PRIME
TIME
Specific
public/private development possibilities with the Veterans Affairs, MTA,
CRA and County of Los Angeles were presented at the Regency Club recently
by David Farrar (second l.), Real Estate Attorney and Chairman, Los Angeles
Community Redevelopment Agency; and John Infantino, (r.) Managing Partner,
Federal Development LLC; with cooperation from (from l.) Alice Wilson,
Board Member; John Stern, past president; and Sharon Kaplan, President.
The U.S.
Government is one of the world's largest property, owners with over 435,00
buildings and over half a billion acres of land.
Now is
the time to take advantage of prime development opportunities on public
properties. This generated much discussion among the attendees.

of business
SO that you can more easily choose to do business with other members.
We will also be adding information to our website - links to other
sites of interest to our members, etc.
We will be continuing
our support of education through programs at the Utah Street School
- we are exploring expanding our efforts through a tutoring program
that would hire junior high and high school students to work with
the elementary school kids - a win-win for everyone.
For those of
Von who attended our Annual Awards Luncheon, you know how successful
the event was, and how moving to have the LAPD Bagpipe Band, along
with many representatives of the LA Fire Department who went to
help at Ground Zero - along with honors for two new institutions
in downtown Los Angeles - one, the Frank Gehry designed Disney Concert
Hall nearing completion, and the new Cathedral. The coming together
of heroic, cultural and religious inspiration made it a truly special
event.
I am pleased
to be serving my second year as President of LAHq, and the Board
and I are looking forward to a great year - to meeting as many of
you as possible and finding ways for you to benefit from your membership.
We are always interested in your suggestions and appreciate your
support.
