700 business and civic leaders honored David Freeman, former general
manager of the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power, with
the Spirit of Los Angeles Award for "keeping the lights on"
in the city with his distinguished leadership, at LAHq's 40th
Annual Awards Luncheon at the Music Center.
The Spirit
of Community Award was presented to Timothy J. Leiweke, Anschutz
Entertainment Group, who as president of Staples Center has
brought renewed vitality to downtown Los Angeles.
Recipient
of the Cultural Award was American Cinemathque for it $15 million
rehabilitation of the Egyptian Theater, a key element in the
revitalization of Hollywood Boulevard.
Special
thanks were given to Barbara Trister, Luncheon Chair, and Bob
Taylor who coordinated over two dozen exhibits.
Introducing
Mr. Freeman was long time friend, Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky
who commented on the national attention California's energy
crisis was receiving and Mr. Freeman's visionary stance and
courageous leadership in protecting our city.
(Mr. Freeman is currently head of Califonria's
Energy Commission.)

a forum for the discussion of public policy. Through small forums
and research studies, the committee examines issues that affect
the business climate in Southern California. The committee focuses
on smart growth, transportation, public/private partnerships,
attracting and retaining businesses and their impact on development.

Supports
and assists inner-city grade schools through various programs
and personal participation. We believe the future of our city
can only be as bright as the quality of our workforce. The workforce,
in turn, can only be as strong as its education. Therefore,
we are committed to assisting inner-city children during their

events, recap past events and guest presentations and bring
committee issues and activities to the attention of the membership.

affecting the business and political environment. Develops resolutions
and position papers on various matters, represents the Board
by disseminating such positions through press releases, letters
to the editor, meetings with elected officials, appearances

in local schools and seeks donations of new and used computers

to the way such systems can be integrated into their own business
